Preventing Heat Stress in Your Employees
Employees, who work outside in the summer, or in hot indoor spaces, may be susceptible to heat-related illnesses and injuries. Taking steps to prevent illnesses and injuries caused by extreme heat may protect your workforce and reduce your workers compensation insurance claims.
There are steps you may take as an employer to protect your workers during the hot summer months.
• Provide plenty of cold water and sports drinks for workers who work outside in the sun or in hot buildings.
• Provide regular breaks in cool areas, and insist that all employees take their breaks.
• You may want to schedule the hottest jobs for early in the morning before the temperature reaches its hottest point.
• Train employees and supervisors to recognize signs of heat stress, and know how to respond to an employee in a health emergency.
Employees at a greater risk for heat-related illnesses are those who are older, overweight, have heart disease or high blood pressure. Should an employee need to be treated for a heat-related illness or injury, it is important to seek medical treatment for them, and to notify your NJ insurance agent if the problem may result in a claim.
